What is a Tree Preservation Order?
A Tree Preservation Order is a legal protection placed on a tree, group of trees or woodland by the local planning authority.
The purpose of a TPO is to protect trees that make an important contribution to the area. This may include trees that are especially visible, mature, historic, attractive or valuable to the character of a local place.
Before Carrying Out Tree Work
If a tree may be protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or if it is within a conservation area, permission or formal notice may be required before any work is carried out.
Always check the official guidance before pruning, cutting, removing or carrying out any work to a protected tree.
Why TPOs Matter
Protected trees can provide lasting value for streets, parks, gardens and local neighbourhoods.
- They help preserve the character of local areas
- They support wildlife and biodiversity
- They contribute to cleaner air and shade
- They help maintain Solihull’s green landscape
- They protect important trees for future generations
